In the past few decades, education has changed a lot. Classroom-based classes have been replaced by online learning methods which offer flexibility pre-recorded courses with class meetings which are conducted via videoconferencing software that can be used in real-time. Even these online methods may not be enough for students who prefer classrooms with real-time interaction.
Live online learning is a great alternative method to other online learning strategies. It allows students and instructors to interact in real-time through videoconferencing programs such as Zoom. The classes provide students with the opportunity to ask questions, dispel confusion, and gain more understanding of the content of the class.
Although live learning can have many benefits, some students may have difficulty adjusting to this kind of online learning. This study examines the students’ readiness for online learning and identifies the most important factors that affect this. The results show that the key influencing variables include motivation for learning through online communication, self-directed learning abilities. The researchers also conducted a multi-group analysis and post hoc test to evaluate the differences between gender, undergraduate and graduate students, as well as sub-degree students. It was found that postgraduate students have higher readiness in most aspects of live education compared to undergraduate and sub-degree students.
It is recommended that instructors set clear expectations of what students have to be aware of and learn prior to, during, and after the Live Session. It is essential to provide additional materials such as summaries and gist quizzes. Also, outline, concept maps and study guides are helpful. Instructors should also create activities that build on what the students have learned on their own – for instance, by review, practice, debating and studying.
